Internet security- do i need more?

I'm new to wireless internet. My internet provider has said that my router will have in built security. Do I still need to buy internet security like anti-virus software to protect my pc? They are very expensive and some like Norton take up way too much memory. Is the basic AVG enough to protect my system? Thanks
