Why are the seven deadly sins considered deadly?

These sins were set apart by the Church not because they are necessarily the worst sins anyone can commit, but because they are the root sins from which all other sins originate. For example, theft originates in greed. Murder originates in wrath or sometimes in envy. Adultery originates in lust, and so on.
