Will changing my modem affect my router?

I have a desktop with a router. I am switching my internet provider and am told they will send me their modem and software to hook it up myself. I am assuming the software will configure the modem for me. Is it normal to have to do anything to my router, or, would all settings on that stay the same? Never did this before. The last provider had a tech come to the house and do it. Im hoping nothing gets jacked up from me doing it. Any advice appreciated. Thanks...
